Every interface change meets the same resistance. Most people identify with their mind, so when a familiar habit is taken away, they defend it as if it were part of who they are. This is the psychological bias every designer ends up designing against.

A small circle, a big reaction
For almost twenty years, Wi-Fi, signal and battery sat side by side in the corner of the iPhone. With the iPhone Duo, Apple merged them into a single circle, and the reactions split quickly: some called it clever, others called it confusing.
Part of the criticism is fair. A ring has to be learned, while a battery silhouette explains itself. And when all three signals are weak at once, the icon becomes harder to read at the moment you need it most.
Most of the reaction, though, has little to do with readability.
The mind defends what it knows
Google's research teams call this change aversion: when a familiar interface changes, people react negatively, even when the new version works better, and the reaction usually fades as the new design becomes familiar (Sedley and Müller, 2013).
Two effects explain most of it. The mere-exposure effect makes us prefer things we have already seen (Zajonc, 1968). Loss aversion makes us feel a change as a loss before we evaluate what we gained (Kahneman, 2011).
The new icon is rejected first and explained later.
Who is actually in charge?
We tend to believe the conscious mind makes our decisions. Research suggests most judgement happens quickly and automatically, below awareness (what Kahneman calls System 1). The conscious mind often steps in afterwards to explain the choice. Nisbett and Wilson (1977) showed that people confidently justify their decisions with reasons that did not actually cause them.
In practice, the automatic reaction decides and the conscious mind builds the explanation. Since most people identify with that explanation, they defend it as if they were defending themselves.
Psychology calls this cognitive fusion: treating a thought as a fact, or as part of the self, rather than as something passing through the mind. "I hate this icon" turns from a reaction into a position, and positions are hard to give up.
The people who observe their reactions
Some people relate to their thoughts differently. They notice the reaction ("I don't like this") and then ask a second question ("or am I just not used to it?"). Researchers call this decentering, and it is linked to lower emotional reactivity (Bernstein et al., 2015). In one set of studies, a fifteen-minute mindfulness exercise reduced the sunk-cost bias (Hafenbrack, Kinias and Barsade, 2014), although a later workplace replication did not confirm the effect.
Awareness does not make anyone immune. Knowing about bias does not remove it, and higher cognitive ability does not reduce our blind spot for our own biases (West, Meserve and Stanovich, 2012). People who observe their reactions are still biased; they are simply less driven by it.
Separate real problems from reflexes
Feedback in the first week is mostly reaction. Measure over weeks rather than days, and test the design in its worst state (low battery, weak signal, poor light). If people still struggle once the novelty wears off, the design needs work. If they stop struggling, the issue was familiarity.
Weigh feedback by substance, not volume
The strongest reactions often come from the people most attached to their habits. Their feedback is worth hearing, but it should not decide the direction on its own.
Respect the constraint behind the change
A new form factor needs new visual language. Keeping an interface unchanged only because it is familiar means letting the same bias decide the design.
Closing (?) thoughts
When people react badly to something new, they are showing how closely they hold on to what they know, as much as they are judging the product.
Designers work with the part of every user (and of themselves) that has not yet learned to observe its own reactions. Good design solves the problem and also gives people a reason to look twice.
The mind resists what it doesn't recognise. Awareness is what lets it recognise again.
